“I love the fellowship. It is the glue that holds my sobriety together.”</a>
What’s your name and drug of choice?
John B. and my drug of choice is alcohol
What’s your sobriety date? June 1, 2012
Give us a little background information and describe your experience as an addict:
I grew up out in the country outside of Houston. As I reached my teen years, I didn’t feel like I fit in with my family and wanted to be somewhere else. Wanting to be somewhere else became a pattern for me. Alcohol let me deal with that. When I was drinking, I was somewhere else. I made it through college and law school and landed a dream job. Eventually I married the woman of my dreams. Everything was great except I couldn’t stop drinking. If I wasn’t getting ready for work or at work, I was drinking. There finally came a point when I couldn’t sober up to get to work at all. That’s when I made the change and gave up alcohol for good. It took inpatient rehab and outpatient aftercare, but I haven’t had a drink in over eight years.
What do you do to maintain sobriety?
I made meetings regularly until the pandemic hit, but I still stay in daily contact with guys in recovery. We don’t all do it the same way, or follow the same path, but we are all there for each other when needed. I love the fellowship. It is the glue that holds my sobriety together. It may not be for everyone, but it is for me.
What are you grateful for?
Everyday I try to have gratitude, fellowship, and to be of service, either inside or outside the rooms of AA. So far so good.
How are you doing these days?
I used to lie and say life is good. Now I say the same thing, but it’s true.
And did we mention multi talented?
John is a very humble man, but his talents shine inspiration through six strings and the truth. Or at least a slightly twisted sense of humor. Enjoy!
